Why do we read in English?

On January 25, I participated in the programWhy do we read in English?’, organized by SLAA (Foundation for Literary Activities in Amsterdam) and taking place at Perdu, Amsterdam.

Prior to this evening, I translated the poem ‘Intifada Incantation’ by the poet June Jordan: the (Dutch) translation can be found here. Translator Jenny Mijnhijmer translated the same poem, and both of us recited in on January 25, without having read each others' translation beforehand.

After reading the poems, we had a conversation with the authors Nikki Dekker and Pelumi Adejumi, which was moderated by publisher and writer Elte Rauch.
